Stanley was a wonderful, friendly mensch of a guy. I feel lucky to have seen him a few years earlier at the Wightman School 50th reunion. I recognized him instantly then, as he aged a lot better than most of us! I never knew that he was ill, but remember missing him at the Allderdice 50th. Sad to hear that he left us much too soon.
HAPPY, HAPPY GERRY! ALL THE BEST! - Howie
Saw your shout-out to MIneo's on MSNBC the other night. Well done! Still the best.
So, I e-mailed Jonathan Rosenberg at his U. of Maryland address, and got back the following reply. Looks like a mathematician was born that year in Miss Kunkle's AP calculus class!
"Dear Gerry,
Very nice to hear from you. Yes, I'm a mathematics professor at the University
of Maryland (in College Park). I taught at Penn from 1976 to 1981 and moved
to Maryland then, and have been here ever since. You can see my web page
at http://www2.math.umd.edu/~jmr/
I do remember Miss Kunkle's calculus class and it definitely got me started on
what's been my profession for 40 years, so in a way it was a key moment
in my life. Hope you and everyone else are doing well.
I get back to Pittsburgh from time to time and I see that Allderdice still
looks about the same as it always did, except for some minor renovations.
(I admit I haven't gone in; this is just looking at it from the outside.)
All the best,
Jonathan

At the reunion last weekend, some of us were reminiscing about our 12th-grade AP Calculus class with Miss Kunkle. In that class was a 13-year-old kid who was by far the best student in the class. His name was Jonathan Rosenberg, and I think he was the son a math professor at Pitt. I also think I remember that he had his Bar Mitzvah that year!
At any rate, Richard Brean said that Jonathan was now a math professor himself at U. of Maryland. I googled him and bingo -- there he was! You can find ANYTHING on the web!
... and a really courageous girl. She was one of the very few African American students at Allderdice back then. That must have taken real guts. I had a number of classes with her, and I just remember her as being really smart and really nice. Does anyone know when or where she died?
